After School Program

Fields of Dreams (FOD) is an initiative of A Greater Washington (AGW), a DC non-profit organization that has operated this program in Wards 5, 7 and 8 for 25 years and has a formal partnership with DC Schools. The program is focused on teaching baseball, providing physical fitness activity and nutrition education, and promoting character education by focusing on the values by which baseball great and civil rights activist Jackie Robinson lived his life. We also provide a supportive after-school environment through social and emotional learning, homework help and academic enrichment.

FOD operates an after-school program within DC public and public charter schools. This program allows participants to practice their baseball in the off season, while getting homework assistance and developing their character at the same time. During the school year at each of our elementary schools, we serve approximately 25 boys and girls with a classroom teacher and a baseball coach, who work as a team both in the classroom and on the field. Teachers are in charge of academic enrichment activities and coaches are responsible for baseball instruction. We provide each student with first-rate baseball equipment and a pro-style uniform. Our students are served a healthy snack through the After School Supper program.

In the spring, the elementary schools play baseball games against one another in our own Fields of Dreams league. We complete the season with a Ward Series Championship.

What is the goal of the Fields of Dreams program?
The program is focused on academic enrichment, fitness & nutrition awareness, character education, and baseball knowledge and instruction. It is our hope to instill an interest in baseball and softball for D.C. youth. The fabric of our program is based on the values that guided the life of Jackie Robinson on and off the baseball field, as written about by his daughter Sharon in her book Jackie's Nine.

How will I know if my child has been accepted into the program?
If your student is accepted to the after-school program, you will receive an email with orientation materials and will be asked to confirm your child's enrollment. Please do not assume your child has been accepted just because your application was received. Completing an application does not guarantee a slot.

Who can join the after-school program?
Children who are currently enrolled at Browne Education Campus or Friendship Blow-Pierce in the 3rd through 5th grade.

Does my child need to have experience with baseball?
No! We are a developmental program. We will teach any student, including beginners. All we ask is that your child comes with a positive attitude and a willingness to learn.

What kinds of activities will children participate in?
Our program offers academic & enrichment activities related to nutrition & health, character development, fitness, baseball knowledge and baseball instruction and other team sports. We will also take field trips. After-school snacks are included.
